So you want to become a photographer? You want to express yourself through your photography? That's certainly a great idea, but being a good photographer requires a lot more than your passion and a DSLR camera. Most of the the times you will end up with photos that will not even be close what you envisioned.
To help you express yourself the way you want and to capture your vision through the lens of your camera, here I am going to share 5 great tips that will help you get started in the right way-
Focus On A Center Of Attention
Frame your shot in way so that the subject you want to showcase in the photo is the clear center of attention. Avoid unnecessary distractions and noise from your frame. You must understand that when someone views your photo, they will only see the objects you decide to show in the image.
Your Camera Doesn't See The Way Your Eyes Do
It's obvious that our eyes have a higher dynamic range than even the best camera in the world. Dynamic range refers to how well you view the environment in extreme dark and light conditions at the same time. The human eye is highly capable of clearly seeing a dark subject in a bright background. However, cameras have much lower dynamic range. Hence, what you see with your eyes is not what your camera will capture. You need to consider this while taking photos next time.
Aperture Control For Depth Of Field
For most aspiring photographers it is easier to understand the concepts of ISO and shutter speed than the use of aperture settings on your DSLR camera. Aperture control basically refers to the F number on your camera. A small F number or wide aperture will result in a shallow depth of field; while a large F number or small aperture will create a deeper depth of focus. This will enable you to control the focus and how clear the non-subject areas.
Focus On The Light Sources
It is highly important that you pay adequate attention to all the light sources available in the area where you are taking the photos. You also need to have a good understanding of how light will interact with your DSLR camera. There are many ways that light can affect the final outcome of your photos, especially when you are shooting in sunlight. It can be rather tricky to use sunlight properly depending on the location, time of day, intensity of the sun and your subject. But when you know how light will impact your frame, you will be able to compose the shot in a way to use the light in the best way possible.
Always Be Prepared
Taking memorable photos is not easy. You cannot always plan a photo as the most ideal shots are taken in moments when you least expect it. There have been numerous incidents when there was a perfect shot and I missed it Just because I couldn't take out my camera at the right time or had the wrong lens on or it was in the wrong settings or was simply turned off. You will realize that the best moments usually last for only one or two seconds. If you are not ready then you will surely miss that shot. When I take photographs, I frequently check my camera settings and adjust the exposure.
I hope these simple but effective tips help you to hone your photography skills and improve our style. However, you must also know that the more you practice, the better you will get at it. So get all your gears on, turn on your camera and start shooting.
